Ubuntu 8.04 Installing Global Menu: fail

Installing Global Menu isn't working for me.
The problem seems to be decompressing, but since I'm following instructions on various pages,
there seems to be nothing wrong. The only thing that comes to mind is that I am doing this on
VMWare Fusion and I am using a Macbook to do this (Macbook doesn't have a good graphic card).
However, decompressing has nothing to do with graphics (I'm doing it in terminal, anyway), so it
hardly makes any sense why it doesn't work.
